Message from the Exalted Ruler
Congratulations to the Float Committee! For the second year in a row, Deming Elks #2799 took top honors for best portrayal of the theme, Gone Country, in the Tournament of Ducks Parade on August 23rd. (See photo on cover page) A lot of hard work went into the float as you can see. I won’t try to list everyone by name, because I’m afraid I’ll leave someone out, but you know who you are, and you did a GREAT job! Roger Bladow and his committee collected $200 for first place, and will also be receiving a plaque from the Duck Race.
I also need to thank everyone who helped with the Duck Race breakfast. We made record money again this year, plus some for C.P.. Bill Snell has announced he is retiring as chairman, so if you are interested in heading up this important committee, let me know. And on behalf of the Lodge, thanks Bill for your years of service.
On August 18th Ollie Cooper, Fred Kent and myself made a trip to Alamogordo to pick up some bar furniture and other items purchased from the Elks Lodge there. We drove up, and then rented a truck to bring the stuff back. With these items, we have a real head start in furnishing our new club room.
We are officially looking for a new Loyal Knight. We reluctantly accepted the resignation of Ernie Arrey in August, and have called an election to fill the position on September 4th. Jo Ann Snell has already been nominated. Nominations will open again on the night of the election. If interested, let me know. Another officer has also verbally stated that he plans to resign, so there may be other openings soon. There is no better way to serve your Lodge than as an officer. Think about it!
Officers, remember the District Deputy will be visiting at the second meeting in November. Hopefully, all current and potential officers are getting their parts down. I feel that we need to start up ritual practice again in October. Let me know if Tuesday nights are ok.
Thanks to Jim Lyons for stepping up and putting on a meal this month. How about you? We try to have meals at least twice a month, and you can choose the menu, date, and charity where the proceeds go. Fridays and Saturdays seem to work best. Get with us if you’d like to host a meal.
I will be attending the New Mexico Elks Association Fall meeting on September 27th in Albuquerque. Any Elk in good standing is welcome to attend. In addition to the one-day meeting, the annual Cerebral Palsy drawing will be that night. If you haven’t already, turn in your stubs so we can be sure to get you in the drawing.
And if you haven’t figured it out, Friday food is back. Stop in and enjoy a brat. Joe Grove also has some other ideas up his sleeve, so keep watching.
That’s it for this month. Until next time, remember, Elks Care, Elks Share.
Yours in Elkdom,
Mike Hedrick ER
