Editor’s Note: First names only were supplied.

Worker's Settlement From Dave Johnson PER– Secretary (November 30, 2011) The Lodge has been informed by our attorney, member Robert Turner, that the worker’s compensation case, which occurred several years ago at the T or C Lodge has been settled, and the Lodge will have to come up with $37,000 to pay medical bills. It could have been much worse as this worker was denied a total knee replacement, which could have meant a payment of over $100,000. T or C had paid employees, and DID NOT have workers compensation insurance. When we merged, we inherited this liability. A hearing will be held on January 10th to come up with a payment plan.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (September 30, 2011) Well summer is over and fall is here. There are quite a lot of things coming up to do. We are waiting for our pull tab machine to come, it should be here in the next one to two weeks. I also ordered a CD Juke Box to replace the old 45 Juke Box. I would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to the Float Committee for another prize winning Float. GREAT JOB!! Plans are in the works to have Karaoke every Friday, as a few of our members have asked for this. With this in mind, we are trying to redo the back room with better tables and chairs. On October 8th there will be a Pork Roast Dinner with sauerkraut, potatoes, carrots and dessert for $7.00. On October 28th for a $10 donation it will give you a Halloween Costume Party with prizes, a Turkey and Wild Meat Feast Dinner, and Live Music. The music will be provided by Dana and Ron Bivens. The dinner will be a Buffet style dinner with turkey, some wild meat, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, salads, rolls and desserts. Dinner will be from 5 until 7 pm. Music and Dance will be from 7 pm until 9 pm. Dinner only is $7, or dance only $7. COME AND RELAX WITH YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS!! I am restarting Friday Lunches again. The October Menu will be: 10/7 Hamburgers with chips; 10/14 Chile with Cornbread; 10/21 Chicken and Dumplings with biscuits; 10/28 Split Pea and Ham Soup with Crackers. My lunches will still be $3. If anyone would like to volunteer to do a Friday Lunch they can set their own price for their lunch. All volunteers are greatly welcome and appreciated. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (July 31, 2011) Well, September is here and Fall is on it’s way. I would like to congratulate all the Elk’s Float Committee for a GREAT JOB!! You did it again (#1)!! I’ll be starting Friday lunches again in October, so if anyone has a favorite you would like, let me know. Also, if anyone would like to volunteer a Friday lunch it will be greatly appreciated. These lunches raise money for our different funds, and anyone who volunteers a lunch chooses which fund it is to go to. Those who volunteer a lunch will set what the cost of the lunch will be. My lunches will be $3.00. I’m also starting to make plans for another Halloween Party this year. Well this is all for now, so I’ll close for now with this: Hot Chicken Sandwiches 1/2 cup chicken stock 1/4 cup evaporated milk 1 Tbs. Flour 1 Tbs. Butter 1 teas. Onion juice 1/4 teas. Salt 1 cup minced cooked chicken Sliced toasted bread Make a sauce of stock, milk, flour and butter. Add next three ingredients and heat thoroughly. Place on slices of toast and serve on a hot platter. Serves two.

Bingo Committee From Dave Johnson– Asst. Manager (July 31, 2011) First, I would like to clarify a statement made in this column last month. The change to allow certain games of chance in private club bars ONLY applies to two items, pull tabs and raffles. All other games of chance are still prohibited, and stiff penalties still exist. I apologize for any misunderstanding the statement “games of chance” may have caused. Even football polls are still prohibited. With that said, it looks like we will not be getting the Lucky Tab II device we told you about last month. New Mexico Gaming LLC has told us that the New Mexico Gaming Control Board is investigating the company promoting this device. The machine that was demonstrated to the gaming board and the machines that were received were not the same, and those machines were in total disrepair. Most likely these machines will be decertified. We have started looking into a standard pull tab machine. This certainly won’t be as much fun, but it will allow us to get started. The machine we are looking at would have to be purchased, and cannot be leased like the Lucky Tab II. The machine would cost $3,935, and include the first four deals. We will need to take this to the Lodge before proceeding. Once ordered, delivery time is about three weeks.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (June 30, 2011) Well, July 4th is less than a week away. Be sure to come for hotdogs and hamburgers at the New Lodge. Even with the picnic the New Lodge the bar will be open at the Old Lodge. The picnic is free to all Veterans and spouses. We all had a real good time at Harold Hood’s 80th Birthday Party on June 22nd. Hope to see all of you members on July 23rd for the PER Dinner (SATURDAY). Our State President, John Hilliard, will be here. Well that is all I can think of for now, so I will close with a recipe for you. Summer Breeze Limeade 1 1/2 oz. Vodka 1/2 oz. White Cream de Cacao 5 oz. Limeade 1/2 ounce Green Maraschino Cherry Juice (for color). In 8 oz. Glass, pour vodka over ice, add Limeade, cream de cacao and cherry juice. Stir. Garnish with chocolate mint candies and enjoy.

Bingo Committee From Dave Johnson– Asst. Manager (June 30, 2011) As of July 1st, the laws will allow for the sale of pull tabs in the lounge area. However, since the Lodge Bingo license is listed at 3401 Raymond Reed, we will, after filing certain paperwork, be allow to have a pull tab machine at the old facility, 311 E. Maple, but for one year only. That is the decision of the New Mexico Gaming Control Board. Before allowing the pull tab machine at the Old Lodge, we will need to file a charter or similar document, showing both locations, the first page of the Bingo application, and a floor plan for the social quarters (Old Lodge). Once this is done, the Gaming Board will allow a one year waiver for the dual location. After a year, we either need to be in our new Lodge, or get rid of the machine. The Lodge, at the meeting on June 16th, approved the initial lease and first deal of pull tabs for a machine to be placed in the social quarters. The cost will be about $3160, which will come from Bingo and Raffle monies. The machine will be from NM Gaming, LLC.

4th Annual Luau and Golf Game From Harold Hood (5/31/11) Members of the Float Committee, the Luna Ticks RV Group and 4 guests had a great time at the Luau and Tournament this year. We enjoyed a brief visit from ER Harriet. The golf game was great. The wind co-operated and didn't blow until after the game. All in attendance really put forth at the Karaoke session on Friday night. Thanks to PER Dave Johnson, this is always a big hit at our functions. Thanks to Chef Richard Wyatt, we had a wonderful pork loin dinner, along with all the other good dishes provided by the members and guests. This year we had a special treat. Thanks to a couple of visiting Hula dancers, we had some extra entertainment. A little over $200 was raised and earmarked for the RV Park at the New Lodge.

Bingo Committee From Dave Johnson PER - Asst. Manager (April 30, 2011) We should be getting our new Bingo and Raffle License with the correct Lodge number in the next few days, thanks to the efforts of Lauralyn McCarthy with NM Gaming, LLC. In addition, our key people will not need to go through a training class. That was the good news. The bad news is that a State Statute, which prohibits an officer of the Lodge from being a manager or caller, does apply to non-profit Fraternal organizations. We are hopeful that the issue can be put on the governor’s call at the short legislative session in January. The New Mexico Gaming Board has verbally told us that the officers already licensed will be allowed to continue to work until their permits expire (first one will be September, 2012). Also, Mike Hedrick has resigned from Bingo. That leaves only Fred Kent and myself to run and call Bingo. At the Bingo Committee meeting on April 28th, Ollie Cooper agreed to apply for the manager’s job. Also, spouse of member Gene Schubert, Carmen, is now listed to call for the Elks. She calls regularly for the DAV. Thanks Carmen!

T or C Building From Dave Johnson PER (April 30, 2011) We now have professional help to try to sell the old Lodge building in T or C. The Trustees have entered into an agreement with PER Bettie Brannon, a T or C member and realtor in T or C, to sell the building. While we will pay a commission on the sale, it was decided to go this route after several unsuccessful attempts to sell it on our own. Everyone agrees we need to get this building off our hands, since we are still paying a mortgage (about $6,000 still due), plus limited utilities, insurance and property taxes. These bill add up, and take away from our own charity funds and building fund. Our new Building Chairman, Guy Gilmore, is ready to go, but right now we need more money. We have been assured that once the building in T or C sells, with permission from our State Sponsor, Hon. Chuck Williams, some of this money can be used to finish our New Lodge. Keep your fingers crossed. If we sell the building for anything “more or less” than was approved for a potential buyer months ago, it will again need to be taken to the members.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (April 30, 2011) I would like to thank all the Lodge members who supported the Friday lunches. I’ll restart them again in the fall. Our PER Fish Fry was a big success and I’m hoping to have many more. The Annual Luau and Mesquite Manor Golf is May 6th and 7th. There is a sign up sheet in the Lodge. Hope to see you there. During the PER dinner on May 27th, don’t forget to have one of our $2.00 margaritas and join us for karaoke.

T or C Building From Dave Johnson PER– Secretary (February 28, 2011) We have another potential buyer for the old Lodge building in T or C. The Trustees have signed a real estate agreement with an agent out of Tularosa who has buyers for the building. Apparently the agent’s niece and sister and brother-in-law are looking for a location for a feed store. They are willing to pay the $250,000 approved earlier by the Lodge for the previous sale that fell through. However, they may want the kitchen, and if so the price will be higher. If the price changes, then the sale would again have to go up for a vote. The agent has now asked the Lodge for certain disclosures, including the fact that there is no lead paint, and copies of the prior year’s utility bills. We will keep you posted. Also, some good news on Bingo. The Public Regulation Commission now shows both 2750 and 2799 in good standing, and that paves the way for filing of the Articles of Merger. Once filed, we should be able to get our new license.

Recipe Update From Judy Dunning (February 28, 2011) We are about half way there, but could still use about another 150 recipes. Especially needed are recipes for appetizers. This is a separate category, and we have very few submissions. We also need more drink recipes, vegetable dishes, and main courses with the exception of casseroles. We have plenty of those. Remember, these are your favorite recipes, which mean you should have at least tried them. Sorry, we cannot accept CDs or copyrighted cookbooks for inclusion. Forms are available at the old Lodge. Please follow the instructions on the back of the form. Or if you prefer, you can download the form at demingelks.org. Remember to type or print your recipes so they can be transcribed into the database correctly. We have had very few submissions from our T or C members. Remember, this is your cookbook too. We hope to soon post a progress “meter” at the Lodge to show how many recipes are still needed soon. Also, tentative plans are to ask students in the High School Art Class to design a cover. The entries would then be judged, and the winner’s drawing would be the cookbook cover. We will ask the Lodge for a $50 first prize. We will need a committee to judge their drawings. If interested see our incoming ER Harriet Kirich. Mail your recipes to PO Box 112, Deming, NM 88031, drop them off at the old Lodge, 311 E. Maple, or email them to recipes@demingelks.org.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (February 28, 2011) Well, we finally have gotten through the winter and I’m looking forward to spring. I would like to wish all the new officers good luck in the coming year, and to say welcome. I’m looking forward to working with all of you. Starting in March the night of our PER Dinner we will be having $2.00 margaritas on the rocks. Don’t forget our yearly Cajun Dinner on March 8th from 5-7 pm. Hope to see you all. Our March Lunch Menu will be: March 4: Steak Casserole with French Bread; March 11th: Homemade Chicken & Vegetable Pie; March 18th: Smoked Sausage and Cabbage with Roll; March 25th: Lasagna with Garlic Bread. Also, welcome back to Trine Rodriguez, who has taken over the Friday night shift. Thanks for volunteering. In fact, thanks to all the bartenders, who are never paid, and work for tips. Don’t forget to get your Pink Cerebral Palsy Pigs. Just ask the bartender.

Per Capitas From Dave Johnson PER (January 31, 2011) We are still short on making our annual Lodge per capitas (or goals) for our four major Elks Charities. With monies raised from various lunches, we are about $100 away from making the ENF goal of $4.50 per member ($1440). ENF Chairman Sue Cooper has a pancake breakfast planned for February 12th. We are about $300 from making our C & B Trust goal of $3.50 per member. So far we have raised $814.66 of the needed $1120. ER Mike Hedrick is having a meatloaf dinner on the 19th to raise money for the state trust. Veterans need about another $35 to make the $1.00 per member per capita. A recommendation will be made at the next meeting that Bingo sends $50. We are way behind on the Cerebral Palsy per capita of $10 for member or $3200. So far we have turned in $2024.31, leaving us about $1175 short. We will be collecting money from the “Pink Pig” cutouts this month, and that hopefully will help. If you would like to make a personal donation to any of our charities, see the secretary.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (January 31, 2011) Hello members and friends from your bar manager. Well another month has came and gone and I hope you and yours are well. I would like to invite all members and their guests to a Super bowl Potluck on February 6th, 2011 at the Lodge from 3 pm until ? Come enjoy the excitement of the game and your favorite team. Sign up for the potluck at the bar. February Friday Lunch Menu will be: 2/4 Sloppy Joes with Potato Salad; 2/11 Beef Barkley Soup with crackers; 2/18 Chicken & Herb Dumplings; 2/25 Meatball Stew with rolls. If anyone has a favorite you would like for lunch please let me know. I would also like to thank everyone who comes to our Friday lunches, all donations go to the good of our Lodge. I am in the process of ordering book matches with our new Lodge number, logo and address for the social quarters for advertisement. Well that is all I can think of four now so I’ll close with a thank you. Come in to have a cold one with your Friends.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (December 31, 2010) Well another year has ended and a new year is here. I would first like to say that I wish all our members a happy and prosperous year. We had a very nice get-together for our Christmas and New Year’s Party thanks to all who came, especially everyone who helped and brought finger foods. The Chicken Wing Contest was a lot of fun. The first prize went to Tom Titcombe and Mary Ann Kopman of Parker, CO, second to Harold and Barbara Hood, and third to Carole Almanza. It has been a busy two weeks for me and I haven’t had a chance to make a menu for Friday Lunches, but if you check the board at the Lodge I will have something for you to fill your tummy and keep you warm. On Saturday, January 15, 2011, we will be having a Red or Green Chile Pork, Spanish Rice, Bean and Tortilla Dinner with Dessert for $7.00. It will be from 5 to 8 pm and Karaoke to follow. On Saturday, January 22, 2011, Rosa will be back with her Tacos. Well that’s all I can think for now so I’ll close for now with my best wishes to all.

Notes from the Lounge Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (November 30, 2010) I appreciate all of our members who have participated in the November Friday lunches. I hope you all enjoyed the food. I divided the donations between the CP Fund and the Youth Activities Fund. Elks Magazine Snafu From Dave Johnson PER– Secretary (November 30, 2010) How many Elks Magazines did you receive last month? Some households are reporting upwards to a half dozen. Apparently most members of the now non-existent Deming Lodge #2799 received a magazine under the old number as well as the new number, #2750. This meant that a family with three members received six magazines. Those members of the old Deming Lodge may have also received copies for spouses or other family members that they don’t want. I have been in contact with Phil Claiborne, with the Elks Magazine circulation department, and he says the problem should be fixed this month (December). If you are still receiving more copies than you should, please contact the secretary, dave_johnson@demingelks.org, or leave a message at the Lodge (546-2799).

Notes from the Bar Manager From Anna Tobin– Club Manager (October 31, 2010) As this is my first communication with you the members of Lodge 2750, I thank you all for your vote of confidence, and will do my best to serve you. As the colder weather is coming on, I will again start lunches on Fridays. If you would like to supply food for Friday’s lunches, please let me know. Those who volunteer towards Friday lunches can choose which fund the donation money will go to. A sign up sheet will be at the Lodge. I will appreciate all volunteers. If you have any suggestions on what you would like, please feel free to drop them off at the Lodge. November menu will be 11/5: Spaghetti with meat sauce & garlic bread; 11/12: Chicken Corn Chowder with roll; 11/19: Meatball Sandwich; 11/26: Rosy Chile and Beef Soup with cornbread. Donation of $3 per meal. As the distributors no longer give football schedules out, I will be posting them on the board monthly. Thank you again COME IN TO TALK AND RELAX FOR A WHILE.
